Scorching Heat Grips TS as Mercury Soars to 46ºC, Rains Expected in Some Areas

Hyderabad: The mercury stayed about the 46ºC mark for the second day in a row on Saturday, as the state reeled from the parting kick of the summer. The monsoon is about a week to 10 days away but the state could see rains in some areas for the next five days.

The last two days have been the hottest of the year so far: Bhadradri Kothagudem recorded the highest maximum temperatures of 46.4ºC followed by Kumaram Bheem Asifabad at 46.1ºC and Mulugu and Mahbubabad at 46ºC. Eleven districts remained in the red category for maximum temperatures.

The city, too, had a second bad day, heat-wise: Khairatabad 42.6ºC, Serilingampally 41.9ºC and Uppal 41.5ºC. Weather websites showed the temperature at 38ºC even at 5 pm.

Dr Dilip Gude, senior consultant physician, said he had seen a 30 per cent increase in heat-related ailments.

Some areas were lucky: Mahbubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Nalgonda, Nizamabad, Rajanna Siricilla, Vikarabad, Wanaparthy and Yadadri Bhuvangiri experienced light rains with lightning and thunderstorms.
