Udupi: Demanding a stringent law for the protection of cattle in the country, Sri Vishwesha Teertha Swamiji of Pejawar Adhokshaja Matha equated those killing and consuming cattle (beef) to ‘Rakshasa’.
He was speaking at a programme on Indian cattle breeds organised at Udupi on Sunday.
“The cow is like a mother, we depend on the milk provided by it. Don't people feel anything while killing cattle? Those who do it are not human but will have to be categorized as ‘Rakshasas’. Killing cattle and consuming (beef) are unacceptable,” the seer said.
“Trees and animals should be protected. The government takes the initiative to protect the tiger and lion but sadly, no steps are taken to protect cattle. They are completely neglected,” he said and expressed concern over their ill treatment during transportation and the way cattle are butchered by torturing them. He also stressed on the need to protect Indian breeds of cattle.
“The Union government should seriously take up protection of cattle. The Modi government has a good majority and without the support of anyone, can take strong decisions and come up with a law to protect cattle within a year,” he said.
