Bengaluru: Chocolate Factory Road’s unappetising recipe

Residents allege that it took a couple of days for the authorities to clean up the mess.

Bengaluru: Bengaluru may have scaled up in Swacch Survekshan ranking to 194 from 216 in 2018, but its lack of proper mechanism with regards to waste management continues to be a major drawback.

The stretch that connects Chocolate Factory Road to Tavarekere that ends up near Forum Mall has not only turned up into a black spot, but a large stretch of the footpath has turned into a urinal.

"Earlier Chocolate Factory Road used to remain clean, but now even this road has not been spared. We have had a fire incident due to garbage burning and despite the vigil in terms of CCTV cameras, I am not aware if any violator is fined," said Vivek Gupta, a local resident.

"Had they been fined or the eateries that seldom segregate the waste been taken to task, things would not have come to this pass," he added.

Despite the local municipal authorities and the corporator trying their bit to put up rangoli, posters of gods and goddesses, they are hardly a deterrent for violators.

A week ago, the silt of the drain was taken out and kept on the road. Residents allege that it took a couple of days for the authorities to clean up the mess. Due to the ongoing Metro construction work at BTM Layout and the TenderSure project underway at Koramangala, the traffic volume at Thaverekere is so huge that even a two-wheeler rider takes a minimum of 25 minutes to cover 300 metres.

"In this narrow passage if silt is kept on the road how could you expect the pedestrians to walk. There is hardly a walkway. Moreover, at the end of Thaverekere the footpath slabs are in such a miserable state that I often see senior citizens tripping on it. There are gaps between two slabs," said Gaurav, a staff at a local restaurant.
