Bengaluru: Wall collapse leaves one dead, three injured

Labourers at construction site buried under debris, local residents rescue 3.

Bengaluru: A 26-year-old daily wage worker died and three others sustained injuries when Friday's downpour brought down a wall on their shed at CK Achukattu near Basavanagudi early on Saturday morning.

Mahantesh, who hailed from Chincholi in Kalaburagi district, died on the spot, while three others who were staying in the same shed suffered injuries at a construction site in ITI Layout.

The CK Achukattu police have registered a case against owner of the construction site Chitti Babu and the contractor.

The incident occurred around 1.45 am when the wall adjacent to the under-construction site collapsed on the shed where five of the family members were staying.

Mahantesh died on the spot, while his wife Parvathi (22) and their relatives Sharanappa (34) and Shobha (27) were buried under the debris.

Local residents rushed to the rescue, pulled out those buried under the debris and shifted them to Victoria Hospital.

Officials from the Fire and Emergency Department reached the spot and recovered Mahantesh's body early morning.

Officials said that the wall collapsed not because of the rain, but poor quality of construction.

Gautham (19), Mahantesh's brother-in-law, who escaped with minor injuries, said, "Five of us were staying in the same shed as the construction site was flooded. Around midnight, the compound wall of the next building collapsed on the shed. I ran out and started screaming for help. Mahantesh married my sister only last year."
