US cities volunteer to follow Paris accord without Donald Trump
Hyderabad: US President Donald Trump has announced that America will withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement of 2015 as it puts the pressure of unfair environmental standards on American businessmen and citizens.
Even as this announcement sparked outrage internationally, several American mayors, representatives of cities and businessmen are putting together a representation to the United Nations stating that they would go by the Paris Climate Agreement.
The Paris Agreement is an agreement within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The Agreement was adopted by consensus by the representatives of 195 countries, including India and China.
According to the Agreement, the signing countries have agreed to deal with green house emission mitigation from the year 2020, though the percentage of reduction of the carbon footprint would be decided by the countries individually. So far, 148 countries have ratified the Agreement.
The guidelines for the Paris Climate Agreem-ent were prepared on December 12, 2015 in Paris. On the occasion of ‘World Earth Day’, the member countries signed on the agreement on April 22, 2016 at New York. The agreement officially came into existence from November 4, 2016.
Former American President Mr Barack Obama was in favour of the Paris Climate Agreement and had pledged to adopt renewable energy. But Mr Donald Trump had opposed the agreement from the onset and had made this one of the issues of his presidential electoral campaign. As per the agreement, the US would reduce emission of carbon by 28 per cent by 2025.
