Telangana: Unite against terror, say clerics

Muslim youth are falling prey to Internet propaganda.

Hyderabad: Triple talaq and terrorism were on the minds of clerics who delivered sermons on the first Friday of Ramzan to packed halls in almost all the mosques in the city. The clerics urged devout Muslims to stand united against terrorism and condemned ISIS. Noting that the practice of triple talaq had become a political issue, they appealed to men to respect women and not pronounce the triple talaq according to their whims.

Maulana Shafi-ur-Rahman of Masjid-e-Umar said Islam instructs its followers not to harm others. Islam is a religion of peace and no one should be encouraged to spoil its name through dirty means.

He also noted that the issue of triple talaq was being blown out of proportion. He, however, admitted that some men may have misused the provisions for which all this dust is being raised. Men should understand the procedure of talaq and then only proceed with it, rather than just pronouncing talaq thrice in one go, which is not allowed according to Quran.

If there are differences between wife and husband, they should consult their elders first; if they cannot sort out issues, then the couple must stay away from each other for a period, during which they can try and mend their ways. In the case of most couples, matters get sorted out when they stay away from each other, the Maulana noted.

Talaq is the most abhorant solution, according to the Prophet, who never encouraged it, the cleric said.

Another cleric at Masjid-e-Noor said that men misused talaq because they lacked understanding of Islam.

He noted that most youth are influenced by Youtube videos and warned them against succumbing to propaganda spread through such means aimed at bringing a bad name to Islam. If youngsters have doubts about the religion, they should go to scholars and clarify them rather than relying on Internet propaganda.
