Karnataka: Old woman drags hubby by feet for a scan

Fameeda says her pleas for a wheelchair or stretcher went unheard and she had no choice but to drag him by his feet.

Bengaluru: In this day and age when every hospital comes equipped with guerneys, stretchers and wheelchairs, one desperate woman was forced to drag her husband by his feet to a scanning room, where he was due for an abdominal ultrasound on the afternoon of May 31.

Amir Sab, 75, was admitted to the government-run McGann Hospital here on May 25 complaining of breathlessness and weakness. Following preliminary tests, he was advised to do an abdomen ultrasound. His ageing wife, Fameeda claims her pleas for a wheelchair or stretcher, anything to take him to the scanning room went unheard and she had no choice but to drag him by his feet to it. The video of the scene, taken by a witness at the hospital, went viral on social media, shaming the government and the opposition BJP from where stalwarts like B.S.Yeddyurappa and K.S.Eshwarappa hail.

The hospital director, claimed the woman had created a scene and wouldn't wait for the staff to arrange for a wheelchair for her husband. "Although there is no dereliction of duty on the part of hospital staff, a 'D' group employee and two duty nursing staff have been placed under suspension pending inquiry," he added.

Health and Family Welfare Minister, K R Ramesh Kumar too claimed the woman had been a "little impatient," but promised to take action if the staff were guilty of negligence.

Medical Education Minister, Dr Sharan Prakash Patil did not lose time in ordering an inquiry and promised action against the guilty. He also instructed the present hospital authorities to attend to the ailing Amir Sab without delay.
