Chennai: Tension prevailed on Kancheepuram Mettu Street when thick smoke engulfed the locality after a fire broke out in a vehicle scrap shop on Wednesday night.
According to police, the shop was run by Sekar, who dismantles old vehicles and earns a living by selling the resultant scrap. According to the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Service(TNFRS) officials, they received information about the fire around 11.30 pm on Wednesday.
"Two fire-brigades along with 10 personnel from the Kancheepuram fire station were sent to the location. The tyres and wooden parts gutted in the fire had given rise to thick smoke. Our fire-fighters doused the flames in 2 hours and brought the situation under control. No casualties were reported," a TNFRS officer said.
The TNFRS officer suspects that someone might have set fire to the shrubs situated behind the unit and consequently, the fire could have spread to the unit. The Vishnu Kanchi police have registered a case. Further investigation is underway.
In another incident, 50 houses on a cinema set in Meenambakkam were gutted in a fire that broke out on Thursday afternoon.
According to sources, the set of the actor Vijay's upcoming film, an Atlee directorial, was designed and erected at a private ground in Meenamb-akkam, and a major portion of the film was to be shot inside it. The police said that at around 2 pm on Thursday, a fire broke out in one of the houses on the set and spread rapidly, engulfing at least 50 houses which were erected for the filming of the movie.
Three fire brigades from Guindy and Tambaram Sanatorium were pressed into service, and metro water lorries were brought to put off the fire. The Meenambakkam police have registered a case.
