Cyclone Fani damages Kakinada road

Waves rise to a height of over one metre.

KAKINADA: Even before it made a landfall, clone Fani had, by Thursday, caused damage to the Kakinada-Uppada beach road that has been badly damaged in U. Kothapalli mandal near Kakinada coast of East Godavari.

With waves rising to a height of more than a metre, part of the road near SPGL company has been eroded. Sea water entered some villages including Pallepet, Rangampet, Mayapat-nam and others.

The rough weather washed away the wall of Geo Tube near Uppada.

Waves battered boulders of the retaining wall and broken pieces were seen on the road. The officials alerted the fishermen villages near Uppada coast and appealedto them to evacuate their places to reach safer places.

Meanwhile, district collector Karthikeya Misra instructed the officials to gear up for the calamity and take up measures so that lives of villagers are not too badly affected by cyclone Fani.

The collector instructed the Kakinada RDO G. Rajakumari to divert traffic at Kakinada-Uppada Road. He said the cyclone is located on the north side of Kakinada from Bhyrava-palem. He said that sea waer entered Subadra-pet area in U. Kothapalli mandal and instructed the officials to evacuate the people from the villages to safer places. He also suggested Ms Rajakumari to camp at U. Kothapalli and take up preventive measures due to cyclone.

He said that the special officers for the cyclone situation should visit the coastal areas and take up preventive steps. He said that the waves may start battering on Thursday night.

The cyclone was directed towards U. Kothapalli, Tuni and Thondangi mandals.

He reviewed the cyclone situation in East Godavari through video conference. Rajahmundry Municipal Commissioner Sumith Kuimar Gandhi, GUDA Vice President V.C.Marendra and special officers were present in review meeting.

Mr Misra had earlier alerted special officers of coastal mandals in the district to keep an eye on the situation and immediately initiate steps in case the situation warrants.

The officials reached the mandals assigned to them by the collectorate, Kakinada, earlier this week.

The officials had been told to keep a watch on the movement of the cyclone.
