Bengaluru: Beans may be integral part of popular recipes – be it pulav, bisi bele bath, sambar and playa, but now it is wrecking household budgets as the prices have crossed Rs 100 a kilo.
In addition, the prices of other essential items such as tomatoes and green chillies are also on fire. A kilogram of tomato now costs between Rs 40 and Rs 50, while green chillies is expected to touch Rs 100 a kilo.
“Tomatoes, chillies and beans are very common commodities without which we cannot prepare anything at all. From the past few days, price of these items have soared,” lamented Rekha, a home maker.
Traders attribute tomato price hike to severe water shortage and heat wave. “We get our supply from Kolar region and the farmers have been going through tough times due to shortage of water. As the crops wilted, the yield has been affected. This has created a shortage in the supply chain, leading to price rise,” said Mustafa, a trader.
As for beans, traders said that it comes to the city mainly from Anekal, Doddaballapur and Devanahalli. As these regions are also facing water shortage and other adverse factors, the supply this year has almost dropped by half, traders said.
Except for onions and potatoes, prices of all other vegetables have increased marginally and are being sold in the range of Rs 40 to 60 per kilogram.
