BS Yeddyurappa flexes muscles, appoints Srinivas Prasad VP ahead of Mysuru meet

Leaders of Dalit organisations pressured Mr Yeddyurappa on April 24 to accommodate Mr Srinivas Prasad.

BENGALURU: Giving in to pressure from Dalit organizations while sending a strong message to his critics that he still called the shots, state BJP president, B.S. Yeddyurappa, appointed former minister V. Srinivas Prasad, who lost the recent bypoll in Nanjangud Assembly constituency, as vice president, ostensibly to facilitate his participation in the executive committee meeting scheduled to be held in Mysuru on May 6 and May 7.

The appointment set off speculation he was hitting out at longtime critic and leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council, K.S Eshwarappa, whose two key aides were sacked on Monday. But sources in the BSY camp strongly denied that Mr Srinivas Prasad was inducted to fill the vacancy caused by the dismissal of Mr Bhanu Prakash.

Leaders of Dalit organisations pressured Mr Yeddyurappa on April 24 to accommodate Mr Srinivas Prasad after he lost the by-election, insisting that the former minister, despite being a senior leader, would not be able attend the state executive convened in Mysuru, remaining unhappy even after he was made special invitee.

BSY then appointed Mr Srinivas Prasad as vice president, saying it was part of the strategy to focus more on Scheduled Caste voters as was the appointment of Ballari MP, B. Sreeramulu, ST leader, as state vice president.
