Beheading: Police to move Karnataka High Court
BELAGAVI: A case pertaining to barbaric beheading of a man by his nephew in Belagavi city three years ago, which had shocked the residents, has taken a new twist.
Thought the accused, Pravin Patil, had beheaded his uncle and carried the severed head to Shahpur police station and confessed to the crime, the district principal and sessions court recently acquitted him for lack of evidence.
After this setback the police department has decided to challenge the court's order in the High Court. According to sources, the department is seeking advice from several legal experts after submitting an application with district principal and sessions court asking for all documents relating to the case.
The deceased, Rajaram, who actually hailed from Yellur, near Belagavi had four brothers and a sister and was staying in Wadgaon locality with his family. Rajaram and his nephew Pravin (son of Rajaram's brother Vijay) used to frequently quarrel with regard to ownership of their lands.
Most of the properties owned by Patil's family were in Rajaram's name and he was reluctant to divide it among brothers.
Pravin was upset over Rajaram's continued denial to provide his father's share of property and decided to kill Rajaram.
On May 14, 2014, Pravin took Rajaram to Wadgon grave yard in the evening where he beheaded him with a sharp knife. Later, he carried the head in public from graveyard to Shahpur police station even as several people witnessed the horrific incident. At the police station, Pravin confessed to killing his uncle and placed the head at the station's corridor. On receiving a complaint against Pravin by his another uncle Rukmaji, the police had launched in inquiry into the case and submitted a chargesheet to the court. Surprisingly, Pravin was acquitted by the court for lack of evidence.
