Lightning kills 5; death toll up to 178 in Telangana
Hyderabad: Five persons were killed in lightning strikes in separate incidents on Monday even as heatwave death toll surged to 178 in Telangana. In the first incident, Vadde Naveen, 15, of Paamena in Ranga Reddy district died when a thunderbolt stuck him in an agriculture field.
In another incident, three people were killed in a lightning strike at Shamshabad mandal. Two of the victims were from Pedda Toopran and the third from Pedda Golconda.
The TS disaster management department informed that 178 people had lost their lives due to heat-related illnesses. Most of the deaths were reported from Nalgonda district. The last count of 143 was reported on Friday. These deaths were confirmed by the three-member committee with Nalgonda topping the list with 53 deaths, followed by Mahbubnagar at 33.
