BJP Tamil Nadu chief gets threat SMS

The senior leader who is contesting from Virugambakkam, said she had received the threat in her mobile phone at around 9 pm on Sunday.

Chennai: The BJP Tamil Nadu unit president Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan received an anonymous threat asking her to withdraw from the electoral fray or face dire consequences. The unfazed leader said she will not be cowed down by threats and is firm on contesting from Virugambakkam.

The threat to her life, issued through an SMS on her mobile from an unidentified person, asked her to withdraw from the poll fray (for the May 16 Assembly elections) or else she would be killed. “If you did not withdraw from the contest, you will be killed by ramming a lorry onto your car,” the message said and ended with the words: “Amma Vaazhga” (long live Mother), Dr Tamilisai said.

The senior leader who is contesting from Virugambakkam, said she had received the threat in her mobile phone at around 9 pm on Sunday. “I was campaigning then. I noticed the SMS only around 11 pm,” she said. “I will not be cowed down by such threats nor will I go back on my decision to contest.”

Reacting to the threat, Dr Tamilisai claimed she did not suspect anyone behind issuing it. The Election Commission should take action on the person who had issued the threat, besides bestowing adequate attention to the leaders’ security.
Meanwhile, in a petition submitted to the Chief Electoral Officer, BJP state vice president D. Kuppuramu said Dr Tamilisai received the ‘threat’ message from the mobile number: 9042696747 stating that she would be rammed to death if she did not withdraw her nomination from Virugambakkam constituency.

He also demanded that the Election Commission take legal action on those responsible for issuing the ‘threat’ to her and provide police protection for Dr.Tamilisai. The party also complained to the Commissioner of Police.
