Manchu Mohan Babu sentenced to 1 year in prison in cheque bounce case

The court suspended the imprisonment for a period 30 days enabling the accused to file an appeal.

Hyderabad: A regional court in Hyderabad sentenced Telugu film actor Manchu Mohan Babu to undergo one year imprisonment and to pay a compensation of Rs 41.75 lakh in connection with a cheque bounce case registered in 2010 by complainant filmmaker Y.V.S. Chowdhary.

However, following the judgment, a petition was moved in the same court urging suspension of the sentence (imprisonment).

The court suspended the imprisonment for a period 30 days enabling the accused to file an appeal.

Actor Mohan Babu’s owns a production house called Sree Lakshmi Prasanna Pictures, which was named in the case.

The firm produced a movie called Saleem starring Manchu Vishnu, Ileana D’Cruz and others in 2009. The production house hired Y.V.S. Chowdhary as director and decided his remuneration at Rs 1.55 crore. An amount of Rs 1.10 lakh was paid to the director and a cheque of Rs 40.50 lakh was issued a day before the release. After the movie flopped at the box office, the cheque bounced. Chowdhary’s advocate K. Satya Saibaba said, “When Y.V.S. Chowdhary presented the cheque to the bank, it bounced. A case was filed in the court. On April 2, the court pronounced the judgement and sentenced Mohan Babu to undergo one year imprisonment and to pay compensation to Chowdhary.”

Also , the court directed Mohan Babu to pay Rs 10,000 from the actual compensation amount of Rs 41.75 lakh as a fine to the court while the remaining amount should be paid to Chowdhary.

Mohan Babu who was unavailable for a comment, did convey a message through a social networking site.

He tweeted, “Just heard about the false news propaganda by a few TV networks. Much to their disappointment, I am at my home in Hyderabad.” The actor was referring to news of him being arrested.
