PIL filed on need to curb pollution in Chennai

Air pollution creates breathing problem and tuberculosis (TB) problem in slum areas in the city.

Chennai: A society has approached the Madras high court to direct authorities to take immediate steps to prevent/reduce air and water pollution in the city.
The First bench comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice A. Selvam, before whom the PIL filed by Global Warming Environment Protection Society by its president Swami Govinda Ramanjua Dasa, came up for hearing, adjourned it to April 16, after government pleader took notice for the state government and additional solicitor general took notice for the Union government.

According to petitioner, the air and water pollution is threatening the whole world. Air pollution creates breathing problem and tuberculosis (TB) problem in slum areas in the city. Several crores of people were affected by air and water pollution. The Central and state governments should take appropriate action immediately.

The industrial emissions and heavy vehicle emissions were the cause for the air pollution. Industrial wastes and human wastes were missing in the
water resources like rivers, lakes, tanks, ponds and wells. This pollutes the underground water and contaminates the drinking water. Therefore, the governments should take immediate steps to prevent/reduce air and water pollution, he added.
