JEE test: Maths paper lengthy, claim students

This time no weightage will be given for Class 12 marks, while calculating the ranks of JEE candidates.

Bengaluru: The Joint Entrance Examination Main (JEE Main), an all-India level engineering entrance for admission into IITs, NITs, IIITs, deemed universities and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutes, was held on Sunday.

This time no weightage will be given for Class 12 marks, while calculating the ranks of JEE candidates. "I think it is really good that the Class 12 marks are not being considered. Instead of judging us for something we studied before, which was only theoretical, they are now judging us for this exam only," said Jahnavi, a BASE student.

She claimed the paper this time was easy. “It did seem a little lengthy but there were no tricky questions or errors in the test. Physics and Chemistry were even easier than last time, while Math was standard. I am hoping to make it into IIT."

However, P. Srinivas Sastry of BASE said, "Overall Maths paper was difficult when compared with the last four years. Problems related to simplifications were lengthy."

Another coaching centre T.I.M.E also shared a similar view point. They felt Physics and Chemistry questions were relatively easy, but students found Mathematics questions required lengthy calculations.

Another student, Ashwath Mukesh felt Math paper was lengthy. "It was lengthy because of many calculations, rather than problem solving. Physics was surprisingly easy with barely two tricky questions and Chemistry was no big surpise," Ashwath said. He also welcomed the move to scrap weightage for 12th marks.

"I think it is definitely good that 12th marks are not being considered. Board exams only judge your ability to memorize. It is less to do with thinking capability, which is needed in JEE," he added.

The 3-hour exam consisted of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, with questions of objective nature. Four marks will be awarded for correct answers and -1 negative marks for wrong answer. Candidates who want to appear for JEE-Advanced 2017 will have to clear the JEE-M test.
