Kerala: Special court to try MPs, MLAs

All criminal cases pending against MLAs and MPs will be shifted to the new court.

KOCHI: The special court to handle the criminal cases involving MPs and MLAs will function from Kochi on Saturday. The court has been set up in response to a Supreme Court verdict in this regard. Justice Surendra Mohan will inaugurate the court having the status of additional chief judicial magistrate court. It would be functioning from the District Court complex in the city. All criminal cases pending against MLAs and MPs will be shifted to the new court.

The cases coming under the provisions of murder, rape and atrocity against women will be shifted to the appropriate sessions court after scrutiny. According to the available information a total 173 criminal cases are pending against MLAs and MPs in the state and out of these only four cases needed to be referred to the Sessions court. Most other cases are connected with minor offences. In the country, most criminal cases connected with MPs and MLAs coming under the purview of the Sessions court belongs to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
