Chennai: Three bridges in city to get scientific' makeover
CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Corporation has initiated the measures to scientifically renovate three bridges in the city that are in a bad condition.
“Road overbridges on Vaithiyanathan Street and Vijayaraghavalu Road (Parthasarathy bridge), and bridge across Captain Cotton Canal on Meenambal Road, MKB Nagar, are visibly in weak condition,” a senior Chennai Corporation official said.
According to the official, reinforcements at the bridges are exposed in the girders as well as at the bottom of deck slabs. “Other defects noticed are spalling of concrete and cracks at trestle beam,”he added.
It is learnt that the civic body has decided to assess the internal damages and estimation to repair the bridges with the help of a private consultant. “The consultant will conduct non-destructive testing (NDT) in addition to studying existing structures. Renovation of the bridges will be taken according to the detailed investigation report submitted by the consultant,” the official said.
Non-destructive testing is a scientific technique used in evaluating the properties of a material, component or system without causing damage. The technology mainly relies upon the use of electromagnetic radiation, sound and other signal conversions.
“Invitation to interested consultants has been issued and a qualified consultant will be awarded the evaluation works,” the official added.
