Retired IAS officers favoured in Telugu states

Administrative skills utilised post retirement.

Hyderabad: IAS officers are more in demand than IPS officers in both the Telugu states in getting posts after retirement. TS Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and his AP counterpart N. Chandrababu Naidu have set a new trend in giving posts to retired bureaucrats.

In both the states, over 20 IAS officers were given posts after their retirement. This is in marked contrast to the five IPS officers getting posts after their retirement.

Not only retired IAS and IPS officers, but also retired IFS, IRS and All-India Service officers got some posts after their retirement.

Both governments, with the permission of the Centre, extended the tenure of Chief Secretaries for six months and after their retirement, they were given new assignments.

Due to extension of the Chief Secretary’s tenure, ot-her senior IAS officers are losing out on promoted tenures.

The TS government has extended the tenure of former Chief Secretary Rajiv Sharma for six months and after his retirement, Pradeep Chandra was appointed the Chief Secretary.

But mr Pradeep Chandra would retire in one month after becoming the CS. Had Mr Rajiv Sharma’s tenure not been extended after his retirement, Mr Pradeep Chandra would have worked as the CS for seven months.

In AP, S.P. Tucker and Ajeya Kallam’s case is also similar. Had Mr Tucker’s tenure not been extended for six months, Mr Kallam’s term as CS would have been seven months, instead of just one month.

A senior IAS officer said after retirement IAS officers will have good chances than IPS officers in getting some posts.

He said the reason was that IAS officers have more grip in administrative matters than IPS officers.

The senior officer said if any IAS officer was in the good books of Chief Ministers in both Telugu states, they can enjoy a “honeymoon period” after retirement also.
