Pro-jallikattu protest: Pay Rs 15 lakh to hurt students, pleads SFI

Chennai: The Students Federation of India has approached the Madras high court to direct the state government to pay Rs 15 lakh each as compensation to four of its members severely injured in police action during pro-jallikattu protest on January 23.

In his petition V.Mariappan, president, SFI, state committee, also sought a direction to the state government to order a judicial enquiry into the police excesses on pro-jallikattu protesters. Justice C.T.Selvam, before whom the petition came up for hearing on Thursday, posted it to next week.

According to petitioner, the action of the police was planned as it was carried out at the same time in all the places of protest in the state. The SFI front line office bearer Deepak Chandrakanth in Coimbatore was attacked and he sustained fracture on his hand and taking treatment.

Similarly, Ganesh Kumar in Alanganallur at Madurai and Vijayakumar and Vijayalakshmi in Chennai were severely beaten and they also sustained injuries and were taking treatment.

The police had not informed the protesters to disperse before commencing lathi charge. All of a sudden, the police started attacking the protesters. Women protesters were ill-treated and humiliated by uttering filthy words by the police, he added.
