Bengaluru: Bengaluru city is likely to get two roads on stilts (metal flyovers) to beat the burgeoning traffic. Tenders have been floated by two different civic bodies to carry out work on the metal flyovers. One will be constructed by BDA between Chalukya Circle to Hebbal flyover, while another, from Hudson Circle to Minerva, will be monitored by the BBMP.
Work on the Hudson corridor is likely to be taken up from June at an estimated cost of Rs 134.89 crore. The bi-directional elevated corridor can boast of being the first of its kind in the country. The cost of the construction of the flyover is estimated at Rs 127.30 crore and Rs 7.59 crore will be spent towards land acquisition. The project will be completed in 18 months from the time it is taken up for construction, said sources in the BBMP.
Considering the high density of traffic on JC road, the idea of a metal flyover was conceived as early as 2008. A Detailed Project Report (DPR), soil testing and Technical Advisory Report were ready in 2009. But various hurdles led to the project being put on the backburner.
The project was the connecting artery of South Bengaluru, linking some of the major areas such as Hosur Road, Jayanagar, JP Nagar, Basavanagudi and VV Puram. In order to reach Hudson Circle from Minerva Circle commuters have to pass through seven major junctions. About 38.86 per cent of the road traffic consists of four- wheelers, while 39.84 per cent are two-wheelers. In an attempt to decongest the road leading to the airport, the BDA too has planned a steel flyover from Chalukya Circle to Hebbal flyover. The cost of the steel flyover has been pegged at Rs 1310 crore.
BDA Engineer Member P. N. Nayak said that the project has already been tendered. Contractors like L&T and other giants have participated in the tender. If work on the metal flyover is taken up, the magic box underpasses may have to be dismantled, he concluded.
