Karimnagar: Leaders slam cops over ill-treatment of victim
KARIMNAGAR: Zaheerabad MLA and former minister J. Geeta Reddy has come down heavily on the police for allegedly ill-treating the victim of the Veenavanka gangrape. She found fault with information technology minister K. Taraka Rama Rao and district authorities for not extending any support to the Dalit girl so far.
She along with former home minister P. Sabita Indra Reddy, Congress MLA from Narsapur Assembly Constituency P. Sunita Laxma Reddy and Mahila Congress president Nerella Sharada met the victim at Challur village in Veenavanka mandal on Wednesday and expressed their deepest sympathies.
Talking to reporters, Ms Geeta Reddy lashed out at cops for putting the victim through an inquiry that lasted several hours while making luxurious arrangements for the accused who is undergoing treatment in a hospital after being thrashed by the girl’s relatives.
She and Ms Sabita Reddy felt that if the police had not been so lax the heinous incident would not have occurred. Ms Sabita wanted stringent punishment for the perpetrators and urged advocates not to plead in their favour.
Everyone had hoped that law and order would be protected in the TRS government, but the state was registering increasing instances of violence against women, and gangrapes in particular, she remarked.
Ms Sunita Laxma Reddy regretted that women did not have security in Telangana. They were continuing to face atrocities ever since the formation of the new state.
She also faulted the government for not deploying authorities from the Women and Child Welfare department for interrogating the victim in place of police officials.
The leaders also demanded that a family member of the victim be given a government job besides five acres of land, compensation of Rs 1 crore, a two bedroom house and essential commodities free of cost. Or else, the Congress would intensify its stir against the government. Congress SC Cell chairman Arepalli Mohan and many others were present.
The victim told the leaders who visited her that she would like to join the police department to defend herself in future. She sought compensation, cultivable land and a house for her family.
She regretted that the government had offered her no support and was sorry that no action had been taken against Huzurabad DSP and the Veenavanka police inspector.
Meanwhile, state Mahila Congress president Nerella Sharada said that the perpetuators of the Veenavanka gangrape should be hanged. She consoled the victim of the sexual assault at Challur village in Veenavanka on Wednesday. District Mahila Congress leaders Gandhe Madhavi and Guggilla Jayasri were present.
Speaking to pressmen, Ms Sarada criticised the TRS government for not providing medical treatment to the girl till date and for not offering solace to the victim.
Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao is claiming that SHE teams are being operated for protection of women’s security through giant flex posters. In reality, security of women is going for a toss, she regretted. She questioned minister Etela Rajender what sort of support he extended.
