Hyderabad: SCB blocks realty growth

Board except for attempting to partially widen a couple of roads seven years back, has not widened its roads in past 80 years.

Hyderabad: The Secunderabad Cantonment Board has become a major impediment for real estate development towards ECIL, Nagaram, Rampalli, Kompally and Shamirpet among other areas.

Despite roads providing connectivity between Secunderabad and Sainikpuri, Shamirpet, Kompally and ECIL, the board except for attempting to partially widen a couple of roads seven years back, has not widened its roads in the past 80 years.

R.K. Rao, confederation of real estate developers association vice-president, said the SCB has been playing spoilsport when it came to the real estate market towards Shamirpet and Kompally.

“The Cantonment does not even have a master plan defining residential, commercial, industrial, recreational and other zones. The SCB is still living in the 1930s, when it comes to road-widening in tune with increasing traffic,” he said.

Builders and developers also criticised the Army brass for their stand on closure of roads. “The SCB and army authorities have blocked real estate growth on the north side of the city,” they said.

SCB’s elected civilian ward members also agree that it is absolutely necessary to widen roads in the Cantonment.

“The elected body of ward members had passed a resolution for road-widening. Even HMDA was given the responsibility for widening roads but SCB could not hand over the required land. The army authorities need to give large parcels of land for road-widening,” SCB ward member J. Ramakrishna said.
