BMRCL platform for food trucks

The only hitch is that it hasn't been easy for these trucks to conduct their business.

Bengaluru: Food trucks selling a variety of yummy munchies on the streets have become a major hit in the city among the youth of Bengaluru, especially in areas like Koramangala, HSR Layout.

The only hitch is that it hasn’t been easy for these trucks to conduct their business. But now BMRCL has come to their aid and is trying to get these small entrepreneurs some space on rent at the Swami Vivekananda metro station to help them along.

To give them more of a boost, BMRCL along with Bangalore Food Truck Association, is organizing a 'Food Truck Street Fiesta' at Vivekananda metro station from March 4 to 6, in which around 20 food trucks will take part.

Varun Srikanth, the president of the Food Truck Association, points out, “We were running from pillar to post to conduct our business. We have all the necessary licenses and we have approached BBMP on several occasions to provide us the necessary space but they say the present act does not bring food trucks in their ambit. Then we approached the traffic police as well. They were more worried about us obstructing parking or any commercial establishment. Since it has just been a year since the truck food culture started in Bengaluru and we were just 28, we did not have an association of our own and that’s when we decided to form one. We wanted to highlight our issues. Finally, when we approached BMRCL they agreed to provide us the needed space.”

He added, “After the recent success in the Open Streets event at MG Road where 10 of our trucks were plying around the place, we have been provided with this opportunity by Vasanth Rao and the team from BMRCL to run this food truck festival as a pilot project for the whole month of March. The aim: to spread the popularity of food trucks in Bangalore and also to educate people about our existence.” Agreeing with Varun, Vasanth Rao, the spokesperson of BMRCL says, “If this pilot project works, we will see if we can provide spaces across all other metro stations as well, as they are clean and hygienic.”
