Nod for Mobility hub in Kozhikode

The Rs 122 crore dream project in Meenchanda was approved during a cabinet meeting held in 2016.

KOZHIKODE: Finally after a three-year wait, the move for a mobility hub at Kozhikode on the lines of the one at Vyttila in Ernakulam will become a reality. During the budget announcement on Friday, Finance Minister Thomas Issac declared approval for the mobility hub at Kozhikode. “Earlier in a cabinet meeting held in 2016, a Rs 122 crore mobility hub at Meenchanda was approved and the tender, qualification of applicants, the model project and proposal and the draft concessionaire agreement were also approved ”, said Joint Transport Commissioner Rajeev Puthalath. But the project was abandoned half way.

The then proposed multi- crore mobility hub was expected to be constructed through public private partnership on design, build, finance, operate and transfer basis, he added. Mr Rajeev explained, “The mobility hub is a strategically located urban facility where different modes of transport integrate. The hub will be the convergence of road transport, water transport and the metro rail and commuters can use the mode of transport of their choice and also easily change from one mode to another in one campus. This project with multi-mode transport facilities intends to promote the public conveyance system over the excess use of private vehicles and thus reduce pollution.”
