Chennai: Traffic police given body cameras to record interactions
CHENNAI: In a bid to monitor the interactions between traffic police personnel and motorists on the road and to gather proof of traffic violations, the Chennai traffic police personnel were given body worn cameras on Friday.
“Body worn cameras have been given to traffic inspectors attached to Teynampet, Koyambedu, Flower Shop and Marina police stations on trial basis,” an official press statement from Chennai police said.
The decision comes after the death of Manikandan, who immolated self after allegedly humiliated by a traffic police officer on Rajiv Gandhi Salai on January 24.
“The body cameras have been given to record incidents and it will help in enquiring allegations against traffic police,” a police officer said.
The ‘body worn cameras’ that resemble wireless communication set, can be fixed on the uniform.
“We are planning to give cameras to all the traffic police personnel soon,” the officer added.
