Bengaluru: Stink, sewage triggers exodus at HSR Layout

The problem gets aggravated during monsoon, when these drains overflow and water enters the basement of houses.

BENGALURU: Civic apathy is taking a heavy toll on some areas in HSR Layout, as many residents claim they are contemplating moving to other areas and property owners are finding it difficult to get tenants.

Due to lackadaisical attitude of BBMP and BWSSB, the residents of 6th, 7th and 3rd sectors of HSR Layout have been facing a serious problem of sewerage water entering and stagnating in open storm water drains, which is often clogged with silt. Though these areas have been facing the problem for the last six years the authorities have turned a blind eye.

The problem gets aggravated during monsoon, when these drains overflow and water enters the basement of houses. These drains are also a breeding ground for mosquitoes and help spread water borne diseases.

"This serious problem is mainly due to clogging of manholes and sub-lines because of silting. Further, the open storm water drains are not aligned with proper gradients resulting in stagnation of sewerage due to severe silt," said Mr Murty Indrakanti, a resident.

He further alleged that the enormous sewerage water from densely populated nearby localities namely Madeenanagar, Mangamannapalya, Somasundrapalya RajivGandhi Nagar as well as Begur village and surrounding localities enter this layout.

After the heavy downpour in August 2017, BWSSB and BBMP officials visited the affected areas and carried out short term remedial measures, but no substantial efforts were done to curb the sewerage inflow.

Murty further added that several houses have failed to find tenants. The residents have threatened to stage dharna if no immediate is taken by the civic agencies.
