Easing sex test norms opposed
Hyderabad: Women’s and child rights activists are protesting the proposed liberalisation of sex determination tests, stating that it would result in increased abortions of girl children.
Ms Anuradha Rao of Balala Hakkula Sangham said, “The The sensitivity and awareness about the importance of girl child is very limited in our country. Such an act will allow aborting of a girl child which is not good.”
There are fears that the gender ratio could deteriorate from the present 944 females for every 1,000 males if the decision is implemented.
Radiologist Dr Nikharika Gupta said, “If the Act is liberalised, not only will the girl child be affected but also women, who will be subjected to multiple abortions. The decision could harm both women and the girl child.”
