Chennai: 10.6 tonnes plastic collected in 2 days
Chennai: Greater Chennai Corporation has collected nearly 10,602 kg of plastic products in the first two days after the plastic ban came into force in the city.
According to a Chennai Corporation press statement, nearly 1.88 tonnes of plastic were seized in 15 zones of the Chennai Corporation. "Officials confiscated nearly 2.25 tonnes on January 1 and 8.35 tonnes on and January 2," Corporation commissioner D. Karthikeyan said in the statement.
On January 2, as many as 2,376 kilograms of plastics were seized in Valasaravakkam zone, the highest count in a zone yet. Kodambakkam and Tondiarpet zones recorded 859 kg and 720 kg. "The civic body will continue awareness programmes. Action will be taken against manufacturers, traders and users of nearly 14 types of plastics," the release said.
The civic body also appealed to the public to hand over the plastic items at division offices to ensure the effective implementation of the ban.
Meanwhile, a receipt (with corporation emblem and official signature), of a penalty of '1 lakh, made rounds on the social media on Wednesday, saying it was slapped on a plastic user.
The receipt was established to be fake after officials confirmed that they were yet to impose a penalty over the ban.
