BBMP moots register to keep tabs on garbage collection

Palike hopes to address the issue of absenteeism.

Bengaluru: The BBMP is doing everything possible to keep the city clean and prevent dumping of garbage in public places.

Now, they are planning to keep registers at certain points in all areas, which will be signed by the residents or pourakarmikas, which will help officials know whether the garbage was collected.

The idea is being discussed and it is an effective way to keep tabs on the collection of garbage every day by pourakarmikas, said a BBMP officer. “We are still discussing the idea and looking at various possibilities to keep a tab on garbage collection. Keeping registers in every area at certain points will be helpful. Either the residents or the pourakarmikas can sign the registers and this will let us know if the garbage was collected on a particular day,” he said.

The idea was suggested by the residents themselves, as they claimed that pourakarmikas are irregular in collecting garbage and similarly, pourakarmikas claim that they collect garbage every day. To avoid confusion, keeping a register will help in knowing if the work is being carried out promptly, he said.

Another officer said, “We have seen the police maintaining diaries at certain points in their jurisdictions, where the beat police sign every day. Similarly, we are thinking of placing the diaries in apartments or houses or business complexes, where pourakarmikas or the public can sign it. It will be a good move and will prevent residents and pourakarmikas throwing charges at each other. We will discuss it with senior officers and try to implement it at the earliest.”
