Welfare schemes: Aadhaar must for BPL families in Karnataka

CM Siddaramaiah will present his last budget on February 16. The budget session will end on February 28.

Bengaluru: The state government has decided to made the Aadhaar card mandatory for BPL families which want to avail social benefits schemes and will introduce the Karnataka State Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Bill 2017 in the coming session of the legislature.

Law Minister T.B. Jayachandra said since the Centre has made Aadhaar mandatory to avail all social security schemes, the state government too has decided to make Aadhaar compulsory. To make public servants and public representatives more accountable, the government has decided to amend the asset declaration column. Henceforth, public servants and public representatives will have to file asset details of their dependents and kith and kin. Public representatives should file details of immovable properties like ornaments and furniture worth more than '10,000, the minister added.

Another major decision of the cabinet is the introduction of ‘Asha Deepa’ scheme for SC/STs. To encourage private industries to hire SC/STs in their firms, the government has decided to bear the ESI amount of SC/ST employees for one year. This move will reduce the burden of private entrepreneurs and encourage them to hire unemployed SC/ST youth.

The government approved water projects for SCs and STs in border areas like Pavagada, Chellakere and Molakalmuru. Another major project will provide sites to homeless people in Sira taluks, he said.

The Cabinet decided to revise the wages of High Court employees and bring them on par with Central government employees. It was decided to distribute cycles among 8th standard students from this academic year. The government has decided not to give reservation in promotion till January 15, 2017, following a Supreme Court order.
