BENGALURU: All zonal joint commissioner of the BBMP have been directed to ensure that Solid Waste Management (SWM) issue is taken care of and the public are not inconvenienced.
In an interaction with joint commissioners, Bangalore Development Minister K. J. George on Tuesday exhorted them to focus on issues like the functioning of solid waste processing plants and movement of garbage in their jurisdictions.
Mr George directed the joint commissioners to ensure that segregation of garbage at source itself and waste processing plants were used at optimum level. Superintendent engineers concerned have been directed to visit the waste processing plants regularly to monitor the situation, he suggested.
Joint Commissioner (Health) Sarfaraz Khan explained to the Minister that there were seven plants working in the city and handled 1,700 tons every day. Over 53 per cent of the total solid waste generated in the city was being segregated every day, he added.
BBMP also planned to introduce static compacting system by setting up of 50 transfer stations initially so that the waste collected by autos could be dumped there and transferred to plants after the process of compacting.
This measure is aimed at making the city clean and avoid black spots, Khan added.
As for introduction of biometric system for Pourakarmikas, BBMP Commissioner Manjunath Prasad brought to the notice of the Minister that 500 mustering stations had been established across the city to enable pourakarmikas to put their signature thrice a day. Nearly, 20 thousand pourakarmikas signed on Monday, he added.
Mr George discussed issues pertaining to purchase of 34 Mechanical Sweepers and Robotic Machines and suggested the BBMP Commissioner to interact with his counterparts in other major cities about similar services.
