Bengaluru: Strict enforcement of rules disciplines motorists
BENGALURU: Compared to 2016, 2017 saw a steep rise in traffic violation cases as city traffic police ensured strict enforcement of rules and penalisation of erring motorists. On the other hand, there was a decline in the number of fatal road accidents in 2017.
According to a senior traffic police officer, who did not want to be identified, the only way to inculcate discipline among the motorists is to penalize them and inculcate a sense of fear among them.
The traffic police plans to further tighten its enforcement in the coming years and ensure road discipline.
The officer said that the vehicles plying on roads has increased and also has led to serious traffic congestion and this often provokes the people to break rules to reach their destination on time.
“We would advice them to leave their place early and avoid breaking rules. In the coming days, the traffic police will be stricter. It is also heard that the vacancies in the traffic department will be filled and this would help in deploying more traffic police to regulate traffic and carry out checks after 10 pm.” The officer mentioned that in east division has seen the highest violations.
“In 2017, 34 lakh spot fines were recorded, while in 2016 it was 16 lakh. In the West it was 29 lakh cases in 2017 and 20 lakh in 2016, this rise is due to strict enforcement of rules. We are also waiting for the increase in the fine amount to be implemented. This would make the motorists think twice before breaking traffic rules. There is also decrease in the fatal accidents in both East and West zones,” he added.
