Unani initiated by Persian, Arab settlers
Hyderabad: Unani system of medicine is said to have originated in Greece and was introduced in India by Arab and Persian settlers. It has been accepted worldwide because it cheaper and relatively safer than other conventional medicine and the medicines are available easily.
Arabs discovered the ancient Greco-Roman system in the middle of the 7th century and spread it to the new world.
During the British rule, the allopathic medicine of medicine gained momentum in India and traditional systems including Unani faced hindrance. Though allopathy gives instant relief, it affects the immune system and has side-effects including death. Because of this, people are now exploring remedies available in the conventional systems of medicine.
Dr Anjum Sultana, associate professor, said people were realising the advantages of Unani and other traditional methods of treatment which are safer than allopathy.
The Unani system has a complete cure for many chronic diseases, particularly headache, joint pains, paralysis, varicose veins, spondylitis, osteoporosis, thyroid, depression and polycystic ovary syndrome.
“In Unani we successfully treat patients with leeching therapy for varicose veins. Likewise Turkish bath or hamam is gaining popularity in controlling obesity, muscular wasting and viscosity of the humours,” she said.
