Hyderabad: The Supreme Court on Friday directed a three-member committee headed by senior advocate Ashok Gupta to visit Andhra Pradesh to inspect and submit a report on the closure of 1,147 government schools and the proposed closure of another 3,637.
A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra was dealing with a contempt case by AP resident J.K. Raju seeking to punish AP government officials for failing fill the teacher vacancies in schools.
Mr Gupta submitted that there were 9,259 vacancies in the post of teacher in the state.
Mr Guntur Prabhakar, appearing for Andhra Pradesh, while admitting to the number of vacancies told the court that a notification for teacher recruitments will be issued by the month end.
Mr. Gupta said that the arrangement made in Vizianagaram district with regard to the overhead tanks was satisfactory.
Mr Sravan Kumar, counsel appearing for the intervener, submitted that the government had closed schools instead of starting new ones.
