'Citizens for Bengaluru' bats for commuter rail

The MLAs were also requested to use MLA/MP local area development schemes to develop local train stations.

Bengaluru: Citizens for Bengaluru (CfB), which has been running a campaign against the proposed steel flyover, recently launched a public campaign titled #ChukuBukuBeku to demand suburban train service, to ease the burden of the city roads and reduce air pollution.

Volunteers of CfB held a ‘Call our MLA/MP’ campaign on Wednesday and contacted all the MLAs and MPs to let them know that citizens wanted local trains immediately and asked for their support. The volunteers also asked them to join the #ChukuBukuBeku Yatra. The MLAs were also requested to use MLA/MP local area development schemes to develop local train stations.

The proposal has been hanging fire for nearly 30 years. Srinivas Alavilli of CfB said, “It is a shame that so many successive governments in the state and centre have squandered an opportunity that is low cost and readily available due to existing infrastructure of around 180 km of railway lines and nearly 20 stations in and around Bengaluru. More than 25 lakh people can benefit from a full-fledged commuter rail service, drastically reducing the traffic congestion and improving air quality.”
