New campaign for ‘Anemia Free Coimbatore’ launched

COIMBATORE: With the aim to wipe off anemia from the textile city, an ‘Anemia Free Coimbatore’, campaign was launched here on Friday.

An initiative of the ‘Alayam Welfare Trust’, Ms. Sharmila Chandrasekar, managing director of the trust launched the first phase of the campaign at the Maruthamalai Subramaniya Swamy Devesthana Higher Secondary School here.

As part of the campaign, Sharmila educated the school children on the causes and symptoms of anemia besides making them aware on how to deal with the condition.

“Reduction of hemoglobin in red blood cells leads to anemia.” she told the students.

Speaking about the initiative she said “in the first phase of the campaign, we are creating awareness among school children. In the next phase, we plan to create awareness in residential areas through our team of volunteers. In partnership with the state government, the trust will work towards creating mass awareness through short films that will be circulated on the various social media platforms, besides working with the state government’s schemes to prevent anemia.”

On the occasion, Coimbatore municipal corporation commissioner Sravan Kumar J and Sharmila Chandrasekar released a hand book on anemia awareness.
