Chennai: Man kills mentally ill son, tries to end life

Teynampet police broke the door open to find Ramesh’s decomposed body.

CHENNAI: In a pathetic incident that happened on the night of October 28, unable to continue taking care of his 44-year-old mentally-challenged son, an 82-year-old man allegedly killed him and attempted suicide at his residence, in Alwarpet.

Police identified the accused as Vishwanathan, a retired government employee, and resident of Thiriveni apartments in Alwarpet. The deceased was identified as V. Ramesh.

Police said Vishwanathan had been taking care of his son Ramesh ever since his wife passed away a few years ago. Vishwanathan had taken his son to several doctors with a hope of finding a cure for his illness, but his condition only deteriorated.Unable to take care of his son anymore, Vishwanathan last Monday night laced his food with sleeping pills. He fed his son and he allegedly consumed the same food.

Police said the incident came to light on Thursday night, after neighbours informed them about a stench coming from the house, which was locked for three days.

Vishwanathan who was battling for life was shifted to the Royapettah government hospital for treatment. Police said they recovered a suicide note from the house saying ‘no one is responsible for our deaths’. Teynampet police registered a case and are probing.
