Thiruvananthapuram: Food outlets feel heat at stadium

Biriyanis that were priced in the range of Rs. 100 and Rs. 200 were sold out at Rs. 50 and even lesser prices.

Thiruvananthapuram: Scores of food outlet set up at the Sports Hub has literally felt the heat of the poor batting performance of West Indies.

Expecting that the day and night match would extend even till 10 p.m., the food outlets had stocked evening snacks and dinner in large quantities. But as the match was over by around 5 p.m., the food outlets were frantically selling the food items.

Biriyanis that were priced in the range of Rs. 100 and Rs. 200 were sold out at Rs. 50 and even lesser prices. Some shops even offered five to ten puffs for Rs. 50, while some offered two and more sandwiches at the price of one. Likewise ice creams were also sold out at take away prices to the customers.

"It is indeed a severe setback to us. We have taken the space for setting up the stall by paying lakhs of rupees.

But the match is getting over even before half the expected time. Hence we are left with no other option but to sell off the perishable items at throw away prices so as to minimise the loss," said the staff at the outlet of a leading city hotel.
