Kochi: BJP leader held on charge of abusing' IGP

The BJP leader was summoned by the police by serving a notice and subjected to interrogation before recording his arrest by evening.

Kochi: BJP state spokesman B.Gopalakrishnan was arrested on Thursday evening for allegedly using abusive language against Inspector General of Police (IGP) Manoj Abraham during a protest march held to the office of Ernakulam Range IGP in connection with the Sabarimala women's entry issue earlier this week. However, the Central Police later released him on bail.

"We've lodged a case against him invoking multiple sections of the IPC, including 294 (b) (sings, recites or utters any obscene song, ballad or words, in or near any public place), Section 141 (unlawful assembly) and Section 283 (Danger or obstruction in public way or line of navigation)," police said.

Earlier, the BJP leader was summoned by the police by serving a notice and subjected to interrogation before recording his arrest by evening.

"We registered the case based on videographic evidence of his speech. He was duly arrested and released on bail," the police said.
