Why raze Secretariat buildings? Hyderabad HC asks Telangana govt

The bench also recorded the undertaking of the government that demolitions would not commence immediately.

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad High Court on Tuesday directed the Telangana state government not to demolish any of the buildings in the Secretariat complex for 10 days. It asked the government to file an affidavit explaining the reasons for the demolitions.

A division bench comprising acting Chief Justice Ramesh Rangana-than and Justice A Shankar Narayana was hearing PILs filed by Congress MLA T. Jeevan Reddy, the Forum for Good Governance, T. Rajanikanth Reddy and three others, challenging the proposed demolitions. The bench also recorded the undertaking of the government that demolitions would not commence immediately.

Senior counsel Sarasani Satyam Reddy appearing for the petitioners said most of the buildings constructed after 1986 are strong and fit, except for the G Block. He said demolishing such strong buildings for the sake of vastu was a waste of public money.

He said the government was trying to vacate the buildings allotted to the AP government, and demolish them to construct the new complex; in the meanwhile, it had decided to run the Secretariat from BKR Bhavan.
