Srisailam Dam gets surprise water gift

From Friday night, fresh inflows into the river significantly contributed to the storage at Srisailam.

Hyderabad: Notwithstanding predictions by the meteorological department, unexpected rain in the Krishna river catchment area for the last two days contributed more water to the Srisailam dam via the Jurala project.

On Thursday, inflows into Srisailam had receded to 45,000 cusecs and Jurala project authorities had closed the spill way gates due to drop in inflows.

From Friday night, fresh inflows into the river significantly contributed to the storage at Srisailam.

“We are not sure how long this will continue, but we are getting nearly 1 lakh cusecs. We had to open the floodgates again at Jurala,” said executive engineer N. Sridhar.

He said they had closed the gates six times for short periods, and again reopened them again to cope water flowing in.

On Sunday morning, Srisailam was getting 1. 44 lakh cusecs and the water level at the dam went up to 875 ft against the full level of 885 ft. The storage reached 165 tmc ft against the full storage of 215 tmc ft.

Incidentally the cumulative inflows at Srisailam dam since June 1 crossed 205 tmc ft (including releases to various projects and to Nagarjunasagar downstream. Almatti and Narayanpur dams were releasing 55,000 cusecs.
