Hyderabad: Land mafia thrives in Old City

Police says that an absence of unified surveillance on the land mafia is helping the gangs to thrive.

Hyderabad: The absence of a unified surveillance has helped the organised land mafia to encroach the private lands in the Old City after forging documents.

One of the gangs was arrested on Wednesday. The gang, headed by Ali Bin Jabri and Mir Shakir Ali, was picked up by the Balapur police for forging the documents and grabbing a land owned by a woman. The gang was earlier involved in five cases in Chandrayangutta police station.

“Using the forged documents, the gang moves the court for a litigation, which goes on for years,” said Mr Khaja Aijazu-ddin, a High Court advocate. Later, the mafia strikes a deal either by purchasing the land for a lesser amount or exhorting money from the victim. “Victims sell the property to avoid court cases,” he added.

“Now that the gang has come to our notice, we will be keeping a watch on their activities,” said Mr M. Venkateshwar Rao, DCP, LB Nagar.

V. Satyanarayana, DCP, south, said that the police had busted a 11-member gang, headed by Ali Bin Mohd Jabri, two years ago. However, a unified surveillance on the land mafia is missing, he noted.
