Human trafficking case: Hyderabad police seeks custody of qazi
HYDERABAD: The city police plans to approach court seeking custody of qazi Ali Abdullah Rifai who is accused of being involved in a case of female trafficking registered at the Chandrayangutta police station.
Rifai was arrested last week after an Omani, in his 60s, admitted to having paid him Rs 4 lakh to solemnise his marriage with a young girl. The Omani national also handed over the permissions issued by the Sultanate of Oman to Rifai.
The police is trying to ascertain how Rifai was able to issue ‘siyanamaas’ (marriage booklets) to his clients.
He has reportedly performed 200 marriages and issued booklets to couples despite the TS Wakf Board having stop-ped issuing them to him since his suspension four years ago.
A team which left for Mumbai along with chief qazi Farid Ahmed Khan, was not able to seek assistance from the Maharashtra Wakf Board and the minorities department which were closed for Dasara.
The police has asked the victims of “contract marriages” to come forward and report to them.
