Chennai: Incessant rains cause flight delays, diversions

Departures from Chennai were too delayed due to the rain.

Chennai: Air services in Chennai airport were affected with two flights diverted and at least 12 flights delayed on Sunday morning due to incessant rains during the early hours. The city and part of the suburbs received heavy rainfall during the early hours of Sunday - between 3 am and 5 am, according to the met department.

A British airways flight from London and an Etihad flight from Abu Dhabi were diverted to Hyderabad due to poor visibility and landing conditions at the airport. According to an airport official, 342 passengers were on board the flight from London while the Etihad airways flight had 257 passengers. Both the flights were scheduled for arrival between 3 am and 3 50 am, sources said.

Similarly, arrival of flights from Sharjah, Kuwait, Colombo, Pune was delayed and the flights were allowed to land after 4 45 am. Departures from Chennai were too delayed due to the rain. Six international departures were delayed including the two diverted flights to Hyderabad. The other flights included a Thai Airways flight to Bangkok, Air India flight to Sharjah, an IndiGo flight to Singapore. Airport officials said that services were not affected after 6 am.
