Chennai: Downpour leads to traffic snarls

The late night rainfall on Saturday led to water logging causing trouble to commuters on various routes.

Chennai: The heavy downpour on Saturday lent relief from soaring temperatures in the city, but water logging in many areas made it messy for most.

The late night rainfall on Saturday led to water logging causing trouble to commuters on various routes. Water logging on various main roads raised question marks over the preparations by authorities to tackle the upcoming monsoon.

The traffic snarls began early morning Sunday. Some residential areas in T Nagar, Ambal Nagar and Defence Colony in Ekkatuthangal, Gandhi Road in Tambaram and Sembium in Perambur were flooded.

It was not only the potholes and puddles with stagnant water that made it difficult for motorists to ride through, but also the main roads including MTH road, Perambur Barrack road, Valluvarkottam high road and Central Avenue road were flooded.

“One has to ride through a bumpy road on Valluvarkottam High road and rain worsens the situation as the junction is flooded even after slight showers and slows down the traffic,” rued S Ilavarasan, a regular commuter. Flooding of bus stops such as Korattur bus stand and Vadapalani bus depot caused trouble to the passengers using public transport.
