Sacrificial animals sold at a premium

The price of a sheep, weighing about 20 kg, touched Rs 20,000 on Friday morning. However, it fell to Rs14,000 by the evening.

Hyderabad: Demonetisation and Goods and Service Tax has failed to make any impact on the cattle market in the city, with thousands of sacrificial animals sold on Friday.

People flocked to markets in Chanchalguda, Tolichowki, Falaknuma, Kanchanbagh, Jiyaguda, Amberpet and Secunderabad to buy sheep, ram and goat.

The price of a sheep, weighing about 20 kg, touched Rs 20,000 on Friday morning. However, it fell to Rs14,000 by the evening.

“A few traders jacked up the prices anticipating a shortage of the sacrificial sheep. But towards afternoon, loads from the neighbouring districts arrived and prices dropped significantly,” said Azam Qureshi, a sheep trader. at Tolichowki.
