Marriages can be registered with GHMC

Marriage registrations will be like registering for birth and death certificates.

Hyderabad: Once a policy on marriage registrations is framed by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation marriages can be registered at GHMC zonal/circle offices. Marriage registrations will be like registering for birth and death certificates.

GHMC commissioner Dr B. Janardhan Reddy has issued instructions to implement the Telangana Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act 2002. However, the move awaits a policy.

The GHMC is yet to decide whether the deputy commissioner of a circle or assistant medical officer of the health wing will act as the marriage officer.

The GHMC will also prepare guidelines for registration, application on GHMC website, manual application and design of the marriage certificate.

In 2006 the Supreme Court had made it mandatory to register all marriages.

A marriage can either be registered under the Hindu Marriage Act 1955 for Hindus or under the Special Marriage Act 1954 for all Indian citizens. The government of TS has made marriage registrations compulsory. The government had already given its consent by appointing the commissioner (municipal) as marriage officer. However, the GHMC is trying to frame a policy on this.
