Telangana: 63 private colleges denied affiliation over fire safety

While 35 are Narayana colleges, 28 are Sri Chaithanya.

Hyderabad: Sixty-three corporate junior colleges, which are housed in buildings that are higher than 15 metres, failed to get government affiliation as they lack fire safety clearances. Of these, 35 belong to Narayana Group of Institutions and 28 are from Chaitanya Junior College.

Out of 1,465 junior colleges in the state, 1,380 have got affiliation and admission logins. Telangana private junior colleges managements have demanded that the Telangana State Board of Intermediate Education (TSBIE) should immediately release the names of the colleges that did not get affiliation for the benefit of students and their parents.

Mr Gouri Satish, Honorary president of Telangana Private Junior Colleges, said, “We have demanded TS Board of Intermediate Education (TSBIE) to release the names of the corporate colleges which have not got affiliations so far for the academic year 2018-2019. Many students have taken admissions in those colleges as they are not aware of the status of their colleges. Releasing the list of such colleges will help the students and their parents to identify the affiliated colleges.”

Mr Madhusudhan Reddy, Intermediate Joint Action Committee (JAC), said, “Sixty-three corporate junior colleges are not given affiliations because as per the existing norms if the college building’s height is more than 15 metres, they have to get a fire safety certificate from the Fire Safety Authority. Corporate junior colleges have fixed some equipments due to which various other norms have not been adhered to. So the fire safety department is not giving the fire safety certificate in Hyderabad and Rangareddy districts.”

“As per fire safety rules, any building or apartment should be accessible to the fire engine to go around the building. But none of these buildings where these 63 colleges are set up, are accessible to the fire engine, leading to the denial of the fire safety certificate.

Last year, when they fixed the fire safety equipment, these colleges got the affiliations. So there is a possibility that these colleges may also get the affiliations within two or three months if they comply with a few conditions as it would be difficult to shift the students from so many colleges. Out of 63 corporate junior colleges, 35 colleges are Narayana colleges and rest of the 28 colleges are Chaitanya junior colleges.”The officials from TSBIE were not available to comment.
